Hancock claims second at Marshall Showcase

(updated 7/29/2008)
byJodi Holleman
Hancock girls' basketball coach

On Saturday, July 19th, the Hancock Varsity Girls basketball team traveled to Marshall to participate in the Breakdown Summer Showcase Tournament. Due to the fact that we added this tournament late in the summer, we were short several varsity players; however, the younger players really stepped it up and received some quality minutes and showed that they could compete at the varsity level.

In the first game, we were matched up against the Morris Area Tigers and defeated them by a score of 53-39.

Stats were as follows:
Pts Asst Reb Steals
Bree Holleman 16 10 3 5
Michaela Erickson 18 2 3 2
Lauren Nelson 5 2 3 1
Aria Walstad 7 2 3 1
Kendra Schmidgall 5 0 9 0
Ali Reese 0 1 1 0
Shae Brown 0 0 1 1
Abi Ascheman 0 0 2 0
Emily Wentler 2 0 1 0
Olivia Koehl 0 1 1 0
Tara Flaten 0 0 1 1

The Owls jumped out to a 15-2 lead after hitting 5 treys in a row, but the shooting cooled off a bit in the second half. Bree did a great job of distributing the basketball and dished out 10 assists. Kendra pulled down a team high 9 rebounds. All of the girls did a great job of boxing out in this game and played some excellent team basketball.

In the semifinals we were matched up against the Marshall Tigers and defeated them by a score of 57-42. Stats were as follows:

Pts Asst Reb Steals
Bree Holleman 24 6 5 7
Michaela Erickson 16 3 4 3
Lauren Nelson 8 2 1 7
Aria Walstad 2 1 1 2
Kendra Schmidgall 7 0 1 2
Ali Reese 0 0 1 1
Shae Brown 0 0 1 1
Abi Ascheman 0 1 2 0
Emily Wentler 0 0 1 1
Olivia Koehl 0 1 1 0
Tara Flaten 0 0 1 0

Marshall struggled with the Hancock presses in the first half and the Owls led by 23 points at halftime. Once again all of the younger players had the opportunity to receive some quality minutes in this game. The young owls felt like they were thrown into the fire when Marshall brought out their own presses in the final five minutes of the game. This was another nice team win!

In the championship game we were matched up against Pipestone and lost by a score of 41-38. This game was a heartbreaker for us as we led by five points at halftime. Stats were as follows:

Pts Asst Reb Steals
Bree Holleman 14 3 2 2
Michaela Erickson 11 2 4 3
Lauren Nelson 2 2 3 0
Aria Walstad 4 1 1 1
Kendra Schmidgall 7 1 5 2
Ali Reese 0 0 1 0
Abi Ascheman 0 0 2 1

Pipestone has a very nice team and a deep bench. This was a very fast paced and physical game. We had a few critical turnovers in the final minutes of this game that really hurt us. I did see a ton of heart, hustle, and hi-fives in this game.

I was very pleased with the performance of all of the girls. You can tell that they all spent numerous hours in the gym improving their fundamentals. Overall, we had a very successful summer going 26-7-1 at Alex League and finishing runner-up. The Varsity girls also went 8-3 overall in summer tournament action. The JV finished 5-1 overall in RFC action (special thanks to Jason Brown for coaching the JV girls)!
